Policy Statement
Recruitment of Ex-Offenders
Holy Trinity Metropolitan Community Church Edinburgh (MCC Edinburgh) undertakes to treat all applicants for positions within the church fairly and not to discriminate unfairly against the subject of a disclosure on the basis of conviction or other information revealed.
MCC Edinburgh will only request a Standard or Enhanced disclosure where it is necessary and relevant to the position sought.
Where a position requires a disclosure MCC Edinburgh will make this clear on the application form, job advert and any other information provided about the post.
At the application stage, all applicants will be required to disclose all unspent criminal convictions or their entire criminal record, if relevant, for the position in question, as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in the offer of employment or voluntary opportunities being withdrawn.
At interview MCC Edinburgh will provide the opportunity for open and measured discussion on the subject of offences. Failure to reveal information at interview, that is directly relevant to the position sought could lead to withdrawal of an offer of employment.
At interview or when receiving a disclosure which shows a conviction, MCC Edinburgh will take into consideration:-
- Whether the conviction is relevant to the position being offered;
- The seriousness of the offence revealed;
- The length of time since the offence took place;
- Whether the applicant has a pattern of offending behaviour;
- Whether the applicant’s circumstances have changed since offending took place;
MCC Edinburgh will ensure that all those involved in the recruitment process are aware of this policy and have received relevant training and support.
MCC Edinburgh undertakes to make a copy of this policy available to any applicant for a post with Holy Trinity Metropolitan Community Church Edinburgh that requires a disclosure.
Policy Statement Adopted at the meeting of the Church Committee held on 12 September 2005.
